Where’s it at? Off Highway 80 in Truckee just east of Donner Lake

My family and I took a camping trip to Donner Memorial State Park with all the niechews (nephews and nieces) in tow. The campground is beautiful and an easy walk to Donner Lake’s east beaches.

I found the rules a little strict here in terms of number of campers per site and the ranger’s constant patrol of the campground. I totally understand the rules except that we had enough people that we had to get 3 different campsites and it just seemed ridiculous since we all hung out in one campsite anyway, and it could easily have fit the additional tents.

We spent the daytime at the lake which has a nice beach with mixed exposure to sun and shade. One of the highlights was watching the nephews and nieces building sandcastles, floating on giant logs, and just relaxing at the beach which was close enough to carry chairs to.

While I personally prefer being in the South Lake Tahoe area, I’d definitely consider camping here again when adventuring off highway 80 near Donner Lake.
