Where’s it at? Mendocino County
Lake Pillsbury in Mendocino National Forest offers lake recreation as well as camping and RV opportunities. I might not have normally ventured to this destination but it’s a favorite of one of my good friends that lives up in Northern California. I’m definitely not disappointed to have paid it a visit. He goes here annually but I’ve so far only accompanied once. One of the problems is the road in. Just about requires a 4WD vehicle. The last few miles is a dirt and gravel road that is sure to ding any car or truck passing through it. The one time I went I hitched a ride with my friend, and I’m skeptical to ever take my current car down this road. It’s not so much dangerous as it’s just one of those roads that you should plan vehicle maintenance after visiting.
We just about had the place to ourselves, which is definitely a nice feeling. The campsite isn’t as great as some in the sierras that I’ve visited, but it’s not bad at all, offering a good mix of sun and shade and close proximity to water and a boat launch.
On my visit I brought my inflatable kayak, shown in some of the photos below, and we used it to fish from. Definitely fun to paddle around in. We also went to a nearby gun range, not really an official gun range but at the end of the crude airport runway near the campgrounds, it is clearly a normal shooting spot with nice hills to stop any bullet and a number of pre-existing targets to shoot at.
