A friend and I took a dispersed camping trip and what I’ll refer to as super ultra-lightweight backpacking. The location? the Southwest end of Union Valley Reservoir in Crystal Basin near Kyburz, CA off highway 50.
Desolation Wilderness is located north of Hwy 50 on the way up to Tahoe. It offers miles and acres of subalpine awesomeness with hundreds of lakes, trails, and heaps of granite. One of my favorite spots to backpack.
Tuolumne Falls, White Cascade, Glen Aulin, McGee Lake, Polly Dome Lakes, May Lake and Mount Hoffman made for an excellent backpack journey begging for extra memory cards for your camera.
Skyline to the Sea Trail was one of my first non-sierra backpacking trips. Wasn’t sure how it would compare. While it may be true it’s missing the rugged mountain panoramas, it makes up for it with beautiful plant life everywhere and a diversity of terrains. This is a fairly lengthy 35 mile trail that I did in 3 nights.
Crystal Basin offers dispersed camping and is an area full of forests and fairly natural-looking reservoirs. This is a backpacking trip near the South Fork of Silver Creek and Ice House Reservoir.
A backpacking trip through Western Desolation Wilderness to Twin Lakes, Wrights Lake, Gertrude Lake, and Tyler Lake taken in August 2007.
A backpacking trip along the Coast Trail (and others) along Pt. Reyes National Seashore near Pt. Reyes Station in California.
