Hike Date: January 17, 2011
Distance: ~ 3 miles
Trail(s): Mussel Rock Beach Trail
Where’s it at? Far north end of Pacifica, CA in San Mateo County

This was way too foggy a day to go here but I’m posting it anyway. It’s always hard to say how foggy it will be on the coast, even thought his was only a 20 minute drive from door to lot from home.

Mussel Rock itself is a rock just offshore that has, you guess it, a lot of Mussels on it. It also attracts thousands of Sea Gulls. It’s not your average San Francisco white-washed rock, which was nice.

According to geologists this area is the exact epicenter of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It marks the point where the San Andreas fault goes into the sea. It’s fairly obvious while hiking around the coastal rocks that something’s gone down in this area.

It is also known for landslides. I remember seeing the neighborhoods I walked by in the news a few years ago as the cliffs erode year by year in large swaths. This fact is also obvious as you walk around jumping over giant drainage pipes and what looks like a prior battlefield, in the dense fog at least.

I’ll have to head back on a sunny day. I’d read it’s a hidden jewel of Pacifica. The part I really enjoyed was bouldering around in the tunnels, beach and coastal rocks just below the main parking lot.
