Where’s it at? Moraga Commons Park, Moraga, East Bay off 24

Moraga Disc Golf Course is one of the few that goes by no other name. Nine wide open holes on gently rolling hills in Moraga Common Park, this was my old home course when I lived in the East Bay, and is the one I’ve personally played the most.

Disc Golf here is probably best in late Winter, though it’s nice in the fall as well. I find that in the Spring the grass is too long and it’s a pain to find your disc even when you’re sure of the general vicinity. In the summer it gets very hot here and the grass is dead and full of stickers, with the dusty hills and trails to deal with as well. In the late winter when the grass is green but short and the few trees on the course are flowering, it’s a beautiful course.

The course is very wide open, probably the most wide open of all the courses I’ve personally played. On a few holes you’re literally shooting over a lawn. It makes up for this with a challenge in the sense of hills and a few shots that if overshot will put your disc in a backyard, on a street, or in a densely vegetated creekbed.

My personal favorite shot is hole 6 where you shoot essentially from the top of the hill a long distance over a “creek”. You can really set the discs sailing on this hole and I’ve seen my friends make some pretty dandy shots on it.
