Where’s it at? Southwest of Lake Tahoe near 50/89 Y

Fallen Leaf Lake campground in southwest Lake Tahoe just east of Fallen Leaf Lake itself has become mine and my family’s go-to campground when doing adventures in South Lake Tahoe. I almost always camp here 1-2 times per year. This year, 2014, was no exception as I camped here in June and will also be staying here for the 2014 Oktoberfest at Camp Richardson, seeing as they don’t seem to offer the campsites on site anymore this year.

This trip was full of kids. 3 of my sisters attended and two of their friends were there with a total of about 10 kids including some nephews and nieces. A friend from the east coast and I had a separate site, site 40, just a bit aways. I got to break in my new REI Kingdom 4 tent on this trip where my first set up of the tent was done at about midnight on Friday night.

The following day we took a quick walk to the shores of Fallen Leaf Lake which offers great morning photographs but wasn’t still as glass on this particular trip. Later we went and took a hiking trip to Grass Lake from the nearby Glen Alpine Trailhead, and followed that up with a little drive up Hwy 89 to the Vikingsholm overlook which has some good views of Emerald Bay on Lake Tahoe proper.

We had a brilliant fire and roasted ‘dough balls’ which were just “Grands” biscuits, but it was pretty fun. The kids had a lot of fun using my hammock as a 5 person swing. I’m really surprised at the torture that this backpacking hammock has put up with over the years. Good bargain!

If looking to camp in South lake Tahoe there’s nary a better campground than Fallen Leaf Lake.
