Hike Date: July 25, 2015
Distance: ~ 12 miles
Trail(s): Unnamed trails at Grizzly Island
Where’s it at? In South Suisun City, CA

Grizzly Island Wildlife Area is located in Suisun, CA in Solano County, near Fairfield and a little south of Highway 80. Suisun marsh is the largest contiguous area of coastal wetland in California and the beginning of the delta that attaches to the San Francisco and San Pablo Bays. There aren’t proper hiking trails but there are plenty of trails, many overgrown, along the dikes.

This was my first solo hike in a long time other than exercise hikes on weekdays. I enjoy having company but every once in a while it’s nice to head out on my own and just pick the path, where to stop, and when to take pictures without any concern of others. It becomes a tiny bit more spiritual for me and is almost like meditation. On this hike I just walked aimlessly in one direction until I felt like I’d done about half of a 12 mile hike, where I began circling back north. It is a little unnerving when you’re not sure whether the trails you’re on are going to lead to where you think they will. With water everywhere you can’t be sure when your next opportunity to cross the water and get back to the car will be. Most of the trails here are pretty overgrown and I’ll admit my ankles got a good workout with every step needing a bit of balancing.

This area is a big birding area, especially in winter. However I believe the park is closed at that time. There are said to be 15 species of reptiles and amphibians (click here). I didn’t see any of those! I did see some of the 21 mammal species though. Most notably were the Tule Elk that I saw. I was starting to think I’d not see any but finally came upon a group of about 10 of them. I couldn’t help but think that a few might die soon as this was the last day before hunting season opened in the area. They did a pretty good job of keeping their distance from me while I was there.

This is a pretty cool hike with great views of the windmills to the east, Mt. Diablo to the south, and the southern side of the mountains around Napa and Lake Berryessa. Watch out for wind…it was strong and constant on my visit.
