Hike Date: February 8, 2014
Distance: ~ 5.1 miles
Trail(s): San Francisco Bay Area Ridge Trail
Where’s it at? Vallejo near 37 and 80

This hike is the San Francisco Bay Area Ridge Trail’s Vallejo Benicia Buffer Trail Segment, and I took this hike in my quest to hike as much of this trail as I can. I didn’t hike the full trail since a portion of this starts at a golf course and is paved, and while I’d take that if I was biking, I don’t love hiking on paved trails. This trail offers some good views of Mt. Tamalpais, Mt. Diablo, Napa Valley and the northern section of the San Francisco Bay.

I wasn’t sure what to expect here since on the google map satellite view it looked like you would be in a residential “green belt” the whole way, but there were maybe .5 miles of trail that got you away from the residences, the balance of the trail with houses on one or both sides of the trail the whole way. This always takes away from any feeling of wilderness for me but I’m not complaining, trails are trails. This is more of a hike you’d take only if you’re trying to hike the whole Ridge Trail or live nearby. I happen to have both reasons.

There’s a decent amount of elevation change compared to what I was expecting. A few steep sections and a number of areas that give you the option of taking a switchbacked route or taking a more direct straight hike up the hills. The trail is mostly open to the sun and probably would be hot in the summer, and is probably more scenic when the grasses are green, but it’s what you see in the distance that makes this somewhat worthwhile with the bay and surrounding hills and mountains.

This is not really a destination hike but I enjoyed it and you probably will too. The Mt. Diablo view is really nice if you can get a picture in without the refineries showing in front.
