Hike Date: November 29, 2013
Distance: ~ 8 miles
Trail(s): Numerous unnamed trails near Los Posadas State Forest
Where’s it at? Angwin, CA behind Pacific Union College

I feel a little guilty for sharing this on the internet since I could find such little information about it in my searches. A friend showed me this area earlier this year where we mountain biked. It was a great place for mountain biking though more on the easy side (which was perfect for me at the time!).

There are a ton of trails and I couldn’t find any trail map for the area, so I would suggest you either travel accompanied by someone familiar with the area, bring a GPS device, or at the minimum take a long look at a google satellite map of the area. Since it is almost exclusively through a fairly dense forest of oaks and redwoods, it is easy to get turned around and lose your sense of direction.

The hike I took ended up pretty much skirting the whole network of trails, or at least I think so. There is a state forest that has trespassing forbidden, with signage mentioning that you will be prosecuted if you do trespass. There’s a 4H camping area and you can apparently get permission to explore in the state forest which is just south of the trails I hiked on, but there are plenty of trails to hike in this area without actually entering the state forest at all.

The trails here are all pretty much unnamed. In retrospect I’d suggest you take this hike in a counterclockwise direction as there were a couple points of interest that I might have missed having only seen the signage after passing through the areas. Most notably “Inspiration Point” which I might have seen (there was a short spur trail with somewhat of a view but it was overgrown), or maybe I completely missed it. I would like to go back here as there are so many trails that I’m sure I only explored about 25% of the trails.

This is a great hike. I think Autumn would be the best time to visit as there were a lot of good fall colors. Definitely worth a visit if you get a chance. The only downside is that while you see what would probably be a great view of Pope valley through the trees in a few areas, there really aren’t any wide open expansive views other than the meadow that I believe is a field airstrip/airport.
