Hike Date: March 13, 2011
Distance: ~ 5 miles
Trail(s): North Ridge Trail, Sunset Trail, Mt. Livermore
Where’s it at? Island in San Francisco Bay off Tiburon, CA

I’d been wanting to go to Angel Island since I can remember and finally got a chance to go as a birthday gift this year. It was even better than I pictured it would be, with gorgeous views in 360 degrees of the North, East and West Bay Area. You can see north up to mountains in Napa, Mt. Tamalpais, great views of the Golden Gate, Richmond/San Rafael and SF Bay Bridge(s). Alcatraz, Treasure Island/Yerba Buena, Mt. Diablo and the Coast Range peaks along the peninsula.

As may or may not be obvious, a ferry ride is required, unless you’re a sailor or pirate. There was a choice for us between the San Francisco ferry and Tiburon ferry, so naturally I did some math as the two were equidistant in terms of getting to the ferry.

Guess which we chose? The ferry from Tiburon was kind of fun, giving you a few good views of water birds and the approach to the island.

The weather wasn’t the greatest, but in retrospect we didn’t get sunburnt at least! it did sprinkle on us a little, and almost at the very moment we finished the summit loop hike, it started pouring. Too bad the cafe wasn’t open on this day…speaking of, it’s a good idea to bring all the water you’ll need and some snacks or a lunch as well.

The hike starts out with the biggest challenge of the whole thing; a fairly steep natural staircase with wide steps. After that the whole hike is really on the easy side taking some switchbacks and having you circle your way up Mt. Livermore. You start with views west and north and slowly wrap around the eastern side til you get to the summit of Mt. Livermore.

Toward the summit of the mountain there are several different areas with picnic tables and different viewpoints. Naturally we opted for the set of tables at the very top, where we quickly setup the tripod and took some panoramas and varying views of the bay area. It did get a little bit windy at the top so you probably want to bring some layers. I wore shorts but “Brr”d a few times. 🙂 I think the ferry is the coldest part of the day though.

I almost recommend going on a not-so-gorgeous weather day. We didn’t see ANYONE the whole way up to the top of Mt. Livermore (another benefit of the earlier-arriving Tiburon ferry I suppose), and had about 20-30 minutes of privacy on the summit. Far different than what I was expecting with groups of people arriving all at the same time. I guess most of the other groups were taking the less cool perimeter trail instead, a trail I’d like to try sometime also.
