Hike Date: February 2nd, 2013
Distance: ~ 4 miles
Trail(s): Rainbow Trail
Where’s it at? A little north on 89 from 50 near South Lake Tahoe

During my annual trip to South Lake Tahoe some friends and I were itching to get out and take in some scenery and get a little exercise. We’d hoped to go cross county skiing or snowshoeing but the snow didn’t cooperate this year, so we went for a hike instead. Most of the hike did have snow but it was old, frozen snow and we didn’t need the snowshoes.

We opted to go to Camp Richardson where we parked at the Beacon. We walked out to the beach of Lake Tahoe and starting hiking north toward Taylor Creek and Emerald Bay. The first stop was the historic area full of old log cabins between Taylor Creek and Camp Richardson. It’s like a walk back in time where a small village’s buildings still remain, including some pretty neat log cabins. If you go here in the summer months you can take a tour and really see a lot more but it was still nice during Winter.

Continuing along the beach we reached the Mt. Tallac Historic museum, which again is better in summer as it was closed and snowy this time of year. We made our way to the Rainbow Trail which is a nice flat walk through nature’s landscape with Mt. Tallac as a backdrop. There’s usually a lot of wildlife around this area…I’ve seen a lot of bald eagles but during Winter many of the birds weren’t present. There’s also a stream profile chamber here, though it was closed and locked (and the water around it frozen solid), this time of year. Nonetheless it was a good walk around the trail and interesting to see the area I’ve been to a lot of times, during Winter.

This is a destination area in the summer but during Winter it’s a good alternative if the snow doesn’t let you explore other areas.
