Where’s it at? Skyline Wilderness Park in southeast Napa, CA

Skyline Wilderness is the closest to my home in terms of having trails that are of length to exhaust me on day hikes. I have been to the park many times before but hadn’t explored it’s northwestern border, an area left off the map but pointed to as “Tuteur Loop”. I’ve since learned that this is the beginning of a longer trail that is part of the Bay Area Ridge Trail called the Napa Solano Ridge Trail.

Currently there are two ways into Skyline: a $5 day use parking lot at the official park entrance, or free access via the River to Ridge Trail in Lincoln Park near Napa college. On this particular day I opted to pay the fee and park in the lot since it would let me explore further into the park in less time. After parking you can hike through the garden area, which is great, and being up Lake Marie Trail.

I hiked Lake Marie Road until I could cross the (spring-fed) Marie Creek to get to the Thatcher Rim Rock Trail. This takes you up to the highest point in the park called Sugarloaf Peak. But don’t expect any great views on this peak since it is covered in dense oak woodland forest. After hitting the summit you can take a VERY VERY steep trail down the north side of it and arrive at a junction with the Bay Area Ridge Trail / Skyline Trail. I turned left to gain access to the Tuteur Loop (which is actually called the Napa Solano Ridge Trail per signage and some conversations recently. This is a 1.3 mile nice loop through a canyon with two gates, two bridges over the creek, and a diversity of terrain from grassy meadows to oak woodland and chaparral.

When I met back up with the Ridge trail I took this all the way back home to complete the outskirts of the park. The Ridge Trail has some hills to it but nothing too rough, and there are parts of it that grant the hiker some great views of the Bay, Mt. Diablo, and the Napa Valley all the way up to Mount Saint Helena.

Of all the hikes in Skyline Wilderness this is both one of the longest and hardest hikes and most rewarding.
