Hike Date: August 13, 2012
Distance: ~ 1 scenic mile
Trail(s): Matin’s Path (by sign, and unofficially)
Where’s it at? About a mile south of Stinson Beach on Hwy 1 in Marin

“Martin’s Path” just south of Stinson Beach really isn’t, and wasn’t for us, a destination hike. It was just a nice little hike we found driving down Hwy 1 with some energy left from a trip to Bodega and after hiking the Steep Ravine Trail. It is a short, steep trail with some beach and bouldering opportunities at the end. A great view up and down the beach awaits at the end.

There’s a parking lot at the top without much signage (that I noticed) a little bit south of the junction of Hwy 1 and Panoramic Highway and it has a trailhead signed “Martin’s Path” leading down to the beach. It’s a pretty steep trail, not like you’ll slide down but it’s a decent quick workout for sure. There are switchbacks for less than a mile before you hit the rocks. At the bottom of the trail are a few options. You could walk along the beach here, bring a rope or do some free climbing on the boulders, or simply hike up on to the top of the biggest boulder to the left for great views and relaxation. We did the latter. If you’re TOTALLY afraid of heights or even the mildest of “climbs”, the scamper to the top of the boulder might scare you, but it’s nothing bad at all, just a few steps to climb up where you *could potentially* fall and get hurt… At the top of the boulder you can see pretty distant in both directions as you listen to waves crashing against the very boulder you stand on.

This was just a quick hike we took at the spur of the moment but it was pretty fun. If you find yourself with leftover energy while doing something else around Stinson Beach, consider a quick visit to the Martin’s Path.
