Hike Date: June 27, December 26 2010. March 31, 2011
Distance: ~3.5 miles
Trail(s): Mori Point Trail, Sharp Park Beach Trail
Where’s it at? Middle of Pacifica, CA on the coast. Park at Sharp Park for free.
This is a pretty nice hike but rather short. You can make it a longer journey if you want to include more hiking along the ocean in Pacifica, or venture to Sweeney Ridge or Montara Mountain in the same trip. There’s also McNee State Park. That said, it’s very scenic if you’re into ocean and you get a clear day, which is fairly rare in summer.
On the Mori Point Trail, you’re along the coastline the whole way. There are a few choices on how to go about getting to the highest point of the hike which boasts the best view. I typically have done the hike counterclockwise. From the parking lot just hike straight along the beach and continue going straight until you reach a fairly long “staircase”. Good spot to get the cardio started here. From the top of the stairs take a peak over the cliffs into the crashing waves below and then continue along the narrow trail you can see to the south. This is a fairly steep and sometimes muddy/sandy hill that continues the cardio attack.
Then loop around and find the highest point and take a hike to the top for the best overall views. You can see all the way to Mt. Tam and can view Sweeney Ridge and Montara Mountain to the west. To the south you can see only about as far as the southernmost portion of Pacific where most of the surfing gets done.
If you’re looking for a snack or beverage while hiking, you can take a stroll back past the parking lot and to the small cafe at the edge of the Sharp Park pier. It’s also pleasant to take a walk down to the end of the pier and see how the crab fishing is going.
