Hike Date: December 23rd, 2012
Distance: ~2 miles
Trail(s): Monteverde Sky Walk
Where’s it at? Monteverde Cloud Forest in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

During a trip to Costa Rica I couldn’t resist the call of the rain forest… Cloud forest to be exact, and I can’t think of a better one than that of Monteverde in the heart of the country. It seems like forever that I’ve been seeing tourist propaganda showing the hanging bridges that give you a bird’s eye view of the tree canopy.

For $20 we took a self-guided tour of the area. Honestly, we wanted to have a tour guided excursion but we only had about 20 hours here after a long drive from Alajuela and the guided hikes were over by the time we got here. The fee included a welcome drink but we ended up having ours at the end instead, which was fine with the hosts. The Sky Walk was a really neat hike. We didn’t have very good weather on the day we went…I guess you can’t really expect it not to be wet when you take a rain forest hike but this day was really quite wet. It was hard to even keep my camera dry so I didn’t take nearly the amount of pictures I would’ve liked to. Additionally I would’ve loved to spend more time here.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say that it was a tiny bit disappointing in that we really didn’t see or hear very many animals. I’d pictured aardvarks, monkeys, birds galore but I think the time of day and the weather just had it in for us. The plant life, on the other hand, was extraordinary. This was really my first venture into a true rain forest so it was definitely something new and different.

There were 5 bridges in total. They were all quite a bit longer than I would’ve imagined them to be, and far more sturdy. I think they were the most sturdy foot bridges I’ve ever seen. One of the bridges was extremely long, probably a good football field and a half in total, you couldn’t even see the end of it when you started out.

This is a great hike to take if ever you find yourself in Costa Rica. We had trouble choosing between this and Selvatura, and I’ve never been on that hike so I can’t compare, but definitely try to do one of them in your lifetime if you can.
