Hike Date: 2005-2010
Distance: Longest single Trail is about 8 miles
Trail(s): Saddle Loop, Summit Loop, Ridge Trail, Eucalyptus Loop, Dairy Ravine
Where’s it at? Narrowest part of Peninsula off 101 between San Francisco and South SF.
How much? There’s a $5 charge per vehicle for day use, no camping. You can use state park passes I believe

This park is extra dear to me because I essentially live on it and can see it from where I usually do my blogging and computer work. It is one of the coolest looking mountains during a good fog show, where the fog constantly burns off as it flows in from Pacifica and Daly City to the west. I love the several hidden benches with excellent views that await.

I first hiked here in 2005 and was amazed by the views. I would call this a destination hike to at least visit once. It’s one of the few spots in the bay area where you can see the ocean, Mt. Diablo, Mt. Tamalpais and the bay from the summit. It’s view of San Francisco rivals that of McLaren Park nearby, or even the Berkeley hills although this is seeing the city from a north-facing perspective.

The Ridge Trail is probably my favorite although I’m not a giant fan of out-and-back trails compared to my liking of loop trails. The Ridge Trail will often be a little foggy but it’s the point at which the fog burns off constantly throughout the day which gives it a nice touch to look at. Not so fun to be on it when it’s foggy. The Ridge Trail and Summit Trails can also be extremely windy. Counterintuitive is the fact that the Ridge Trail is actually a further hike than the Summit Trail, and the two share their first leg, depending on which way you go on the Summit Trail.

The Summit Trail is my next favorite. I generally hike up through the Eucalyptus loop and head to the summit and then back around on the west and north sides of it back to the car.

The Saddle Loop Trail isn’t bad. It’s a great 2.5 mile-ish loop with an EXCELLENT view of San Francisco, but is much easier than the Summit and Ridge Trails. It’s more of an excercise trail in my opinion, but if you’re traveling here for a destination hike I’d suggest trying to do the Ridge, Summit AND Saddle Loop trails.

The Bog Trail is like a whole different world where some major restoration work is under way and the microclimate is moist, wet and usually green.

In 2008 I watched a fire rage through much of the Ridge Trail area which a few of the pictures show. A little nerve wracking to have one so close!

If you stop by try hitting Julie’s Deli in Brisbane for an awesome and filling sandwich with their yummy pesto mayo!
