Hike Date: July 27, 2011
Distance: ~ 2.5 miles
Trail(s): Spooner Lake Trail
Where’s it at? Nevada-Lake Tahoe State Park at 50 and 28 in NV.

Spooner Lake is situated near the junction of Highways 50 and 28 in Nevada on the southeast side of Lake Tahoe. It is part of the Nevada-Lake Tahoe State Park. The lake is a popular attraction for fishing, viewing wildlife and wildflowers, picnicing, running, cross country skiing, and hiking. There are some rental cabins and campsites in the area as well. The area is also a launching point for hikes on the Tahoe Rim Trail and to Marlette Lake. I’ve hiked the Tahoe Rim Trail up to Spooner Summit and also hiked a bit of it on this trip. I’m told the hike to Marlette Lake is pretty nice and plan to do that one soon, I just didn’t have enough time on the day I was out here. I believe that one is a 10 mile hike.

Spooner Lake is a fairly small lake but very clean and scenic. The perimeter of the lake is only about 2.1 miles long. I hiked the Spooner Lake Trail which encircles the lake with very little elevation change. A number of people were running on the trail and I saw several fisherman on the shores. Biking is not allowed on this part of the trail but is in other portions. Dogs are allowed on leash. No horses. A Nevada fishing license is required to fish here. There is a day-use charge of $1/vehicle with a self-registration kiosk located at the beginning of the trail just below (and surprisingly invisible from) the parking area shown on my map below. I can’t help but wonder what the cost to build and maintain the iron ranger, collect the fees, and print all the perforated/sealable envelopes costs…$1 is a surprisingly low fee.

The trail is pretty narrow in most areas, which caters to my taste. It is packed dirt and offers several interpretive signs about the flora and fauna as well as historical aspects of the lake. There are numerous benches with great relaxing views at about 1/2 mile intervals along the trail.

On my hike I saw a number of birds including a Fish Hawk, Steller Jays, Red Breasted Nuthatch and a number of geese in the marshlands. As for the flora, there are pussypaws, miner’s lettuce, primrose-monkey flower, Brown’s peony, and stickseed, among a number of nice looking brands of wild grasses and pine trees.

This would be a nice place to picnic and would be good for running. It is way too short and easy to make a day trip out of hiking here unless you combine with some of the other trails in the area, but I’m happy to have circled the lake that I’d only seen from a distance on the Tahoe Rim Trail.
