Hike Date: January 1, 2012
Distance: ~ 2 miles
Trail(s): Napa Ecological Reserve Trail
Where’s it at? Yountville / Napa County north of Napa
The Napa Ecological Reserve is located in Yountville, just north of Napa. The Reserve is a California Reserve managed by the Department of Fish and Game. It is a birder’s paradise and the Audubon Society does field trips in the area.
The hike is really very short. I call it 2 miles but that included crossing the river and pretty much exploring every square inch that wasn’t fenced off. Don’t expect a workout, not only is it short but there’s essentially zero elevation change. Nonetheless it is a great place to explore in terms of the unique and natural setting and number of bird species. I found it to be a peaceful area to sit and watch the birds at, and on my visit there was nobody else around.
There is a very small parking lot with a portable bathroom off of Yountville Crossroad. Bring a camera and even consider bringing a chair if bird watching is your reason for visiting.
